🀯πŸ”₯ Myth Busting: Fibromyalgia is NOT an auto 🀯πŸ”₯ Myth Busting: Fibromyalgia is NOT an autoimmune condition!⁣ 🀯πŸ”₯⁣
⁣⁣
I hear this all the time and it's not accurate.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Although there is evidence of immune dysfunction with fibromyalgia, it's not technically classified as an autoimmune condition.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
With autoimmune conditions, your body develops antibodies to parts of itself. ⁣⁣This means the body attacks itself, which shouldn't happen.
⁣⁣
With fibromyalgia, the body is not attacking itself with antibodies (unless there is another autoimmune condition present).⁣⁣
⁣⁣
In fibromyalgia, research shows higher levels of inflammatory immune proteins when compared to people without fibromyalgia. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Other research has shown that the immune response shows characteristic patterns in fibromyalgia that we haven't seen in other conditions. This could be good news in terms of diagnosis in the future.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We see that some supportive aspects of the immune system are lower than we'd expect in fibromyalgia, particularly the anti-inflammatory immune proteins (the ones that help to prevent inflammation from getting out of control).⁣⁣
⁣⁣
These anti-inflammatory proteins are also helpful in activing different arms of the immune response.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This means that it's possible that people with fibromyalgia don't have as strong of an immune response as we'd expect to protect against bacterial and viral infections.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It's too early to tell the full implications of this research in terms of the immune response in fibromyalgia...⁣⁣
⁣⁣
BUT we can tell that inflammation plays a huge role in the symptoms and severity of fibro.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Reducing inflammation should always be a core goal of any fibromyalgia treatment plan.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
What are you doing to reduce your inflammation? I'd love to hear about it! πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡β£

Sugar is a comfort food.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It makes us Sugar is a comfort food.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It makes us feel good and can bring back memories of happy times celebrating holidays or with loved ones. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Because of this, we can crave sugar when we are feeling certain negative emotions.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
You may reach for cookies, cake, chocolate, etc when you're feeling sad, angry, irritable, or stressed. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Recognizing this pattern is the first step to breaking it. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
If you've noticed that emotions play a big role in your food choice, consider other ways to meet that emotional need without using food.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This may include: ⁣⁣
πŸ’œ Calling a friend⁣⁣
πŸ’œ Hugging a pet or loved one⁣⁣
πŸ’œ Doing an activity that feels like self-care (having a bath, reading a book, time away from responsibilities, meditating, etc)⁣⁣
⁣⁣
What could you substitute for sugar to achieve that comfort feeling? Let me know! πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡β£
